Shanta Shelke (12 October 1922 – 6 June 2002)

June 6 Memorial day of writer and poet Shanta Shelke.

She was a poet and writer in the Marathi language. She was also a noted journalist, and academic person. Her work included song compositions, stories, translations, and children's literature. She presided over many literary gatherings. Shantabai has translated Marathi, Hindi, English and Sanskrit literature into Marathi in a very brief style. After completing her schooling from Huzurpaga School in Pune, she continued her education at Sir Parashurambhau College in Pune. She was awarded with "Tatyasaheb Kelkar Gold Medal" in MA examination. Later she taught Marathi in colleges of Nagpur and Mumbai. She wrote many songs for plays and films. Mahakavi Kalidasa's 'Meghdoot', 'Choughijani', along with her poems, her prose writing is also very beautiful and captivating. Her collections of stories like Gulmohor, Kaveri, Basari, etc., are very popular and Odh, Dharma, are Shantabai's famous novels.

For Shantabai, translation was not only a means of earning money, but also an addition to her own language studies. The most famous of these is the Japanese haiku.

Although many literary genres are handled competently by her, poetry writing is Shantabai's special literary genre. ‘Asen Me Nasen Me’, ‘Varsh’, ‘Rupasi’, ‘Gondan’, ‘Anolakh’, ‘Janmajanhvi’ are some of the names of her poetry collections.‘Mukta ani itar goshti’ is her first collection of stories. ‘Swapna Tarang’ is Shantabai's first novel; and, 'Shabdanchya Duniyet', this is her first collection of fine writings.

Actually, Shanta Shelke is the darling grandmother of all children. Shanta Shelke, who wrote many beautiful poems and nursery rhymes for children, such as "Kilbil Kilbil Pakshi Bolti", "Vihinbai Vihinbai". She also worked on the censor board of dramas and films for many years.

Shanta Shelke left us on June 6, 2002. This blog is my tribute to the great, Shantabai Shelke.
